Bougainvillea Courtyard

A Mediterranean courtyard where an iron arch disappears under a mass of scarlet bougainvillea. Behind it a blue door stands half in shade, terracotta pots line the whitewashed walls, and the stone steps in the foreground are painted violet and rose rather than grey — the colour shade actually takes at midday. Everything is laid on in short thick strokes of the knife, so the flowers sit up off the canvas.
